Ex-Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi insists the Rossoneri could not reject Newcastle’s offer for Sandro Tonali and suggests Ruben Loftus-Cheek is the right man to replace the Italy international while Gianluca Scamacca would have a ‘big chance’ at San Siro.

The Serie A giants are set to sign Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea replacing Tonali who will join Newcastle for more than €70m.

“I think that directors have a project in mind, at least I hope so. So it’s fair to let them work and judge them afterwards,” Sacchi told Gazzetta.

“It was a risk to part ways with Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara. I would have settled for a Serie A title and a Champions League semi-final two years ago because investments were not high. Now let’s see what they can build keeping an eye on the books.

“It’s the correct strategy,” continued the ex-Milan and Italy coach.

“To win making debts it’s like cheating to me. Americans keep a close eye on the balance and it’s time to make ideas count more than money because there will always be somebody richer who chases your players, but if you have a project, you are a step ahead.”

What does he make of Tonali’s sale and the imminent signing of Loftus-Cheek?

“Some figures are fundamental for a club like Milan. You’ll see that Milan will gamble on young players, trying to imitate Napoli. Don’t forget they won the title after selling Koulbaly, Insigne, Mertens and Fabian Ruiz, their most famous players.

“Loftus-Cheek is strong physically, he moves a lot which is crucial in today’s football. He also has international experience and this can help the group grow.”

The Rossoneri are close to signing the England international for €16m plus add-ons. The player has already agreed on personal terms with the Serie A giants. The same did his teammate Christian Pulisic, but Milan are still negotiating with the Blues for the signing of the American winger.

The Diavoli also on the lookout for a new striker and West Ham’s Scamacca is one of their primary targets.

“I know him well he is a good guy and he has great potential which, unfortunately, he doesn’t always fulfil,” noted Sacchi.

“He is powerful and strong physically but must learn to move a little more. Pressing and involvement in the play are the aspects he must improve.

“He must make a step forward in terms of mentality. He had highs and lows in the last season so he is a bit of a gamble. I wish he understands he has a big chance, which doesn’t happen every day. He must give his all and play for the team, so he won’t have regrets.”

Fans are not happy with Tonali’s sale, but Sacchi believes they should not panic and trust the process.

“Fans must remember that playing style is more important than players,” he said.

“Without that, even a big champion struggles. Milan won a Serie A title without big names, playing good and entertaining football. This must be the reference point. Play well, have strong motivation and ethics. These are fundamental qualities to go far. Stefano Pioli is a wise coach and knows these secrets.”
