According to reports, Milan were shaken by the strong reaction of fans to Julen Lopetegui rumours and are re-evaluating their choice of coach, looking at Paulo Fonseca.

La Gazzetta dello Sport suggested that the Rossoneri were closing in on their decision to fire Stefano Pioli at the end of the season and bring in Lopetegui.

However, the response from supporters was so virulent in its rejection, resulting in #Nopetegui trending on social media and even a petition set up to block the hiring, that it was difficult to ignore.

Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio now claims the message got through and Gerry Cardinale is reconsidering the idea of appointing the former Real Madrid, Spain, Sevilla and Wolverhampton Wanderers boss.

Milan look at other candidates

Instead, Milan chiefs Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Giorgio Furlani have been urged to re-evaluate the candidacy of Fonseca, who will be a free agent when his contract with Lille expires on June 30.

However, Di Marzio reiterates that there has not been an approach with Antonio Conte – who seems to be closer to Napoli – or Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi.

6 thought on “Milan rocked by savage response to Lopetegui”
  1. Nothing against Lopetequi who is an excellent coach. However, the problem here is these people called owners, they are
choosing him because they want a coach they will build a team for, who don’t have a say of mind of his own, which
is why they are not looking in the way of Conte. A club with ambition should be looking at negotiating great coaches out of their contract, by paying for their release, not scouting for a free coach who you will control

  2. Not sure what is more laughable…!
Going for individuals like Lopetegui and Fonseca in the first place, or then changing their minds based on the reaction of fans. That tells you plenty. That they’re neither strong enough nor convinced enough even in their own decisions.

  3. Conte is the obvious choice but Cardinale wants a yes man. It’s the same as the Maldini sacking. Paolo has a mind of his own and will speak his mind. This owner hasn’t even got confidence in his own choices.
