Former Milan forward Robinho has been arrested in Brazil to serve out a nine-year prison sentence for a rape committed in 2013.

Two years ago, the former Brazil international was found guilty of being involved in a gang rape at a night club in the Lombardy capital back in 2013, when he was playing for the Rossoneri. He stayed with the club for another year before leaving in the summer of 2014.

After being found guilty, Robinho lost an initial appeal in 2020 and a further appeal to the Supreme Court of Cassation in 2022, confirming his nine-year sentence. Following this, prosecutors in Italy issued an international arrest warrant.

BBC News highlights how courts in Brazil upheld the decision to imprison Robinho to serve his nine-year prison sentence, having already decided not to extradite the former Milan forward to Italy.

He will serve time behind bars rather than escaping with a house arrest and was arrested at his flat in Santos. On Thursday, a Supreme Court judge rejected the request to halt detention proceedings.
