New Milan owner Gerry Cardinale is forging ahead with plans to build a new all-Rossoneri stadium in the La Maura area of the city, cutting out Inter by getting a loan for the €600m project.

Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala confirmed this week that the endless delays and red tape have prompted both Milan and Inter to look at other venues for their new stadium, as the Government wants to block the demolition of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The big surprise was that after years of working together on the project of a new shared arena, the two clubs are now ready to split and create their own separate stadiums.

Milan were the first to break away, as new owner Cardinale and RedBird are eager to get the work started as soon as possible, hiring CAA Icon as consultants to find new investors for a loan deal.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the plan is to build a 60-70,000 seater stadium in the La Maura area of the city.

The cost would be circa €600m and the designs have to start from scratch, after the ‘cathedral’ project by Populous was shelved.

Here too, Milan face serious challenges, as already three city counsellors have filed a motion to block development in the Parco Agricolo Sud area of the city in order to protect the environment.

“It is unacceptable that private investors think they can build a 70,000-seater stadium,” said counsellor Enrico Fedrighini.

Inter seem to be looking towards the Assago area, where there is already a large shopping centre and indoor arena for concerts.
