Olivier Giroud continues to contribute crucial goals for France at the World Cup, so Milan are preparing a new contract to tie down the 36-year-old.

The striker has gone from the outskirts of the Bleus squad to their starting centre-forward, due to his fine form in Serie A and the injury to Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema.

He has scored three goals in three World Cup games, including the opener in today’s 3-1 Round of 16 victory over Poland.

That was his 52nd for France, allowing him to set a new all-time record for his country, surpassing the 51 achieved by Thierry Henry.

It just confirms the form Giroud was already on for Milan, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 19 games this season between Serie A and the Champions League.

His contract with Milan only runs to the end of this season, but even before the World Cup exploits in Qatar, there were already plans to give him an extension.

La Gazzetta dello Sport notes there is now added pressure, because his performances will alert interest from MLS and UAE clubs who can offer massive salaries.

  1. He’s not only still delivering the goods, but he’s also a model professional and a man of honor. I’m very happy to have him playing for us.
