Milan are reportedly in negotiations to extend coach Stefano Pioli’s contract after their best start to a season in almost 20 years.

The Rossoneri sit second in Serie A with 19 points, their highest tally at this stage since winning the Scudetto in 2003-04.

Their 3-2 victory away to Atalanta last night also boosted confidence, while the Champions League defeats to Liverpool and Atletico Madrid showed some promising signs of progress.

According to MilanNews.it, the club is so pleased with their performances that they are ready to begin negotiations for a new contract with Pioli.

His current deal only runs to the end of this season, having taken over from sacked Marco Giampaolo in October 2019.

Even then, he was on the verge of being released in July 2020 during advanced talks with Ralf Rangnick, before Milan officials changed their minds and committed to Pioli.

The coach turns 56 later this month and has overseen 56 wins, 23 draws and 18 defeats on the Rossoneri bench.

He also took them to second place in Serie A last season, returning to the Champions League after seven years away.
