Milan’s work in the summer transfer window has not paid off and now the club are starting to feel the effects of that, reports suggest.

The Rossoneri picked up six reinforcements in the summer, signing Charles De Ketelaere, Malick Thiaw, Aster Vranckx, Divock Origi, Yacine Adli and Sergino Dest. Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara guided Milan to their first Scudetto in over a decade with their impressive work on the transfer market, building a squad of tactically intelligent youngsters.

As highlighted by Corriere della Sera, none of Milan’s summer reinforcements have managed to impress so far this season, leaving the club in a tough spot this month. Maldini and Massara now need to decide where to invest as they look to give Stefano Pioli the right players to close the gap with league leaders Napoli.

All six of the reinforcements have seen limited minutes on the pitch and hardly made an impact, frustrating fans and limiting Pioli’s options.

4 thought on “Milan paying for disappointing summer signings”
  1. It is true in the sense that we lost a heavyweight and a guarantee in Kessie and didn’t sign a similar player in any position, so we are weaker than last season in that sense but also other players have grown and are better versions of themselves (bar Tomori).

Now, regarding the youngsters, when you sign 19 to 21 year old players you’re signing them for the future. It’s ridiculous and unfair to expect immediate impact from the likes of Vranckx, Tiaw, Adli and yes, De Ketelaere (despite the price-tag) who are very young and all come from weaker leagues and clubs to Milan. Remember Leao and Tonali, they couldn’t play a key role in their first years.

Even Dest falls into the same category, who might’ve played for Barca but is still only 22 and comes from a different league.

Origi is the only real disappointment here, and a huge one at that. Hurt or not he has been an absolute flop. He was supposed to have a big impact on Milan and solve a few problems with his experience, but instead he’s added some.

  2. Agree with the comments that youngsters need time and there’s no way around that. I am surprised though at some of the prices that Milan paid for these youth products though and also I think it would be easier to develop youth from your home countries. Why go looking abroad so much for youth products at high prices? I think Milan need to revisit some of their business models and approaches.

  3. Dest & Adli have had barely any minutes. I don’t know how you come to that conclusion on these players.
