Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala is “very much in favour” of Atalanta playing their Champions League home fixtures at San Siro.

The idea was floated after a UEFA inspection confirmed the restructuring work in Bergamo won’t be completed in time for the tournament.

Atalanta had used Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium for their Europa League home games, but San Siro is closer to Bergamo and will only be used for continental fixtures by Inter this season.

“I am very much in favour of this, then the two Milan clubs have to decide, but it seems to me they are leaning towards it too,” Mayor Sala told news agency Ansa.

“In my view, it seems to be the right thing to do and a fun twist, as Atalanta are a good team and they have my support. If Atalanta play at San Siro, I promise that I’ll attend a game.”

It comes after Inter and Milan discussed plans to tear down the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and form a new arena next to it.

“There is no news to report on that, as the file for the project hasn’t been deposited.”
