The former Real Madrid man has been displaced in the starting XI by 16-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma, and will now be out for some time.
“Milan announces that Diego Lopez has today underwent a specialist examination in Spain performed by profession Mikel Sanchez,” a statement confirmed.
“For several months the Rossoneri goalkeeper has been struggling with patellar tendonitis in his left knee, which has been managed by physiotherapy up to this point.
“Following consultation today, the Milan medical and Diego Lopez have agreed that Diego Lopez will have to stop for a while, to follow a specific treatment plan.”
The player himself commented on the matter on his official Facebook page, insisting the decision has nothing to do with his being dropped.
“For four months, I’ve been living with patellar tendonitis, I’ve tried to recover, working hard with the medical staff at the club.
“During this period, I’ve done everything possible to be at my best, sacrificing every day, despite the pain, to be available to the Coach [Sinisa Mihajlovic].
“Unfortunately the pain persists, so I have stop and pursue a specific recovery plan. This is the only option to resolve the problem.
“I would like to clarify that this decision was made by mutual agreement with the club, and of course has nothing to do with the recent sporting situation, it’s a decision of a strictly medical nature.
“I’ll continue giving my all to come back soon and as strong as ever.”
