Milan have agreed a deal to sign Atalanta’s Marco Sportiello on a free transfer at the end of the season, becoming the latest addition to the Rossoneri’s goalkeeping department.
According to Calciomercato, the 31-year-old put pen to paper on a three year contract with the option of an additional year on Tuesday morning, which will run until at least the end of the 2025-26 season. In that period, Sportiello will pocket an annual net salary of €500,000.
Sportiello comes in to replace the departing Ciprian Tatarusanu and Antonio Mirante, aged 37 and 39 respectively, and looks set to become the deputy to the influential Mike Maignan, firmly Milan’s current first choice ‘keeper.
The signing of Sportiello is also important in terms of Milan’s homegrown player quota, as every Serie A club requires at least eight members of their 25-man squads to have grown up in academies affiliated to the national federation. Thanks to his 11 years in Atalanta youth ranks, Sportiello fills one of those important slots.
Sportiello has turned out 123 times for Atalanta in Serie A during his eight-season stay as a professional, as well having spent two seasons on loan at Fiorentina and Frosinone between 2017 and 2019.
He has, however, only registered 13 appearances under Gian Piero Gasperini this season, with the most recent outing coming in the 3-1 win over Hellas Verona on Saturday evening.
