Milan have started talks with Irish Under-17 captain Cathal Heffernan and a deal could be reached soon.

The 16-year-old Irish defender is highly rated amongst European clubs and has been training with Atalanta and Roma recently, enjoying his time in Italy. He also spent some time training with Bayer Leverkusen.

As reported by The Sun Ireland, Heffernan has been in Milan for the past few days for talks with the Rossoneri and things have been moving ahead positively, suggesting that a deal may be close.

The Irish teenager is considered to be one of Cork City’s brightest youth prospects and he’s recently broken into the first team, playing 18 minutes in a league match against Galway United back in October.

He could become the third Irish teenager to make the move down to the Italian peninsula in recent months, with Kevin Zefi joining Inter and James Abankwah signing for Udinese recently.

  1. So he wasn’t good enough for atalatan, leverkusen and Roma, but we’ll take him on? How many great defenders have ireland produced to think he comes from good stock?

  2. @Rosario I understand your skepticism given his current experience and I would agree.

There are several Irish players in the current Irish squad who really should be looking beyond England in terms of their club careers. They would be better off if they did.

I would love to see more Irish professional players playing in Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

Irish players are often dismissed just because they are Irish where many could have had much better careers if they looked beyond England.

There are several exciting prospects coming through in Irish football at the moment. They need better agents and more ambitious moves.

  3. Paul McGrath was fairly handy. Also how many strikers of top quality did Liberia produce yet they produced George Weah. Cop on with nonsense comments.

  4. @Sir_Frosinone
Great call but you might as well be talking to the wall. I remember McGrath fitting the entire Italian attack into his pocket for 90 minutes in World Cup 94.

  5. @Rosasrio Nothing to do with national honour ya thick. McGrath, Richard Dunne, O’Shea, Coleman and Irwin would all start over any current Milan defender.

  6. Even Franco Baresi was a McGrath fan. He asked to swap shirts after that game in 94. I’d be impressed at someone doing that to the divine ponytail too I suppose.
