Milan striker Olivier Giroud is the new all-time top scorer in the history of France after opening the scoring against Poland in the World Cup Round of 16.

He had come very close earlier when sliding in at the back post, but Ousmane Dembele had rather over-hit the pass and the veteran got there a little late.

There was no error when Giroud sprung the offside trap on a Kylian MbappΓ© through ball and thumped the angled drive past Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

The 36-year-old had already matched Thierry Henry’s all-time record, but is now solo at the top of the France charts with 52 goals for his country, achieved in 117 caps.

Giroud had drifted out of contention for Les Bleus in recent years, but got back in thanks to his Scudetto-winning exploits for Milan and then was promoted to first choice following Karim Benzema’s injury.

He has been the undoubted key figure for France so far in Qatar, scoring three goals in three games.
