The signing of a new right-back comes after the sale of Emerson Royal to Flamengo and Milan’s decision to not pursue a permanent deal for England international Kyle Walker, who spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan in San Siro, and has since joined Premier League side Burnley.

Before Athekame arrives, Milan could announce the signing of new centre-back Koni De Winter, who has had his medical in the city and is expected to be the replacement for Malick Thiaw, who officially joined Newcastle United on Tuesday night

Athekame and De Winter add to a busy summer for Igli Tare and his recruitment team, who have also brought in Luka Modric, Ardon Jashari, Samuele Ricci, Pervis Estupinan and Pietro Terracciano this summer.
