Former Italy forward Christian Vieri said that, while Milan remain Scudetto favourites, Inter are not out of the picture just yet.

Vieri, who played for both sides throughout his career, said Atalanta, Milan’s next opponents, can beat anyone on their day, while Cagliari, who face Inter on Sunday, are fighting desperately to beat relegation.

A defeat for Milan in either of the next two matches could hand the initiative to Inter, who would then be champions with six points.

“Atalanta in Italy can beat anyone at home and above all away,” Vieri told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Cagliari are fighting for their lives and did you see them at Salerno [in their 1-1 draw against Salernitana]?

“They looked like a team possessed. The table says Milan are favourites but in the next two matchdays anything can happen. There will be surprises.”

Vieri was a member of the Inter side which famously blew the title on the final day of 2001-02, having had their destiny in their hands.

There are similarities this campaign with Simone Inzaghi’s side having handed Milan the initiative following a shock defeat to Bologna with four matches to go thanks in large part to an error from stand-in goalkeeper Ionut Radu.

“This is football,” Vieri said of the topsy-turvy title race.” Otherwise, the favourite, which I believe Inter were, would always win.

“But you still need to play the matches and can’t take for granted that you will win at Bologna. The mistake was what it was but it wasn’t just on Radu.

“If you make a mistake three months before the end you make it up. At the end [of the season] it’s harder with the pressure weighing down on you.”
