Milan could be set to start with a 3-5-2 formation for the first time since April 2019, which was also against current Inter coach Simone Inzaghi, but it wasn’t a successful experiment.

It kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 GMT.

The Rossoneri are ready for some radical changes after a run of dismal results, including the 3-0 Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Inter last month in Riyadh.

Stefano Pioli is reportedly planning a switch to a 3-5-2 formation, and while he has dabbled with this approach during a game, it would be the first time he has started with it at Milan.

It is also unusual for the club, especially as former President Silvio Berlusconi was famously a fan of four at the back.

Curiously, the last time Milan started a competitive match using 3-5-2 was under Gennaro Gattuso in the Coppa Italia semi-final with Lazio on April 24, 2019.

The coach of that Lazio side was of course Inzaghi, who is now at the helm of Inter and has made 3-5-2 his hallmark.

It didn’t go entirely well for Milan, who lost 1-0 to a goal from Joaquin Correa.

Inzaghi’s Lazio went on to win that edition of the Coppa Italia.
