While Milan will stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation for now, including against Red Star Belgrade tomorrow, Stefano Pioli is studying other options.

The second leg of the Europa League Round of 32 fixture is on Thursday, after a 2-2 draw in Serbia.

Mario Mandzukic and Ismael Bennacer are still out of action and Zlatan Ibrahimovic not at 100 per cent, so Rafael Leao is likely to start as centre-forward.

He’ll be supported by Samu Castillejo, Rade Krunic and possibly also Hakan Calhanoglu in a slightly wider left role than he is accustomed to.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport suggest Pioli is already planning some changes to the tactics after recent setbacks, including the 3-0 Derby della Madonnina defeat.

Other alternatives include 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, which would retain the same defence, but change their attacking approach.

Another interesting potential twist could be a 3-4-1-2 formation, using Fikayo Tomori with Alessio Romagnoli and Simon Kjaer.

It would allow full-backs Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria to push forward more in attack than they already do.

Milan (probable): G Donnarumma; Calabria, Tomori, Romagnoli, Theo; Meite, Kessie; Castillejo, Krunic, Calhanoglu; Leao
