Milan have confirmed that Algeria international Ismael Bennacer has suffered a ‘severe’ injury to his calf after being struck down in training with his international teammates earlier this week.

The 26-year-old returned to Milan ahead of schedule after coming down with an injury while training on an artificial pitch with Algeria. The team had been preparing for Tuesday’s 3-0 victory away against Liberia, which was played on an artificial surface.

Bennacer did not stick around, though, and instead reported back to Milanello for further medical tests. He was spotted arriving back in Italy in a wheelchair.

Milan have since provided an update, confirming that Bennacer has suffered a ‘severe’ tear to his calf. The Rossoneri add that he will be subject to a further round of check-ups in a week’s time.

Milan are expected to be without the midfielder for around three months while he recovers from his injury. Initial reports suggest that it will take a number of weeks for the muscle to heal, before his is able to begin any strenuous exercise on it.

Bennacer will miss an important run of fixtures for Milan, who will play Venezia, Liverpool and Inter in the Derby della Madonnina next Saturday.

He could also miss out on upcoming Serie A clashes against Fiorentina, Napoli and Juventus, as well as Champions League engagements with Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge and Real Madrid.
