Milan have announced that Alessandro Florenzi is out of action for circa five months after undergoing surgery on a torn tendon in his thigh.

“AC Milan can confirm that Alessandro Florenzi, during the game against Sassuolo, suffered a severe injury to the biceps femoris of his left hamstring, which required surgery.

“The operation was conducted this morning by Professor Lasse Lempainen in Finland, with AC Milan club doctor, Dr Stefano Mazzoni, in attendance.

“The surgery was successful and Alessandro will return to Italy tomorrow to begin the rehabilitation process. He is estimated to make a full recovery in five months.”

The incident occurred during the 0-0 draw with Sassuolo and it was immediately clear this was a long-term problem.

His teammates held up his jersey after scoring their goals in the 3-2 Derby della Madonnina victory over Inter.

Because of the serious injury, Milan rushed on transfer deadline day to do a deal with Barcelona for right-back Sergiño Dest, who arrived on loan with an option to buy for circa €20m.

Florenzi is 31 years old and was part of the Italy squad that won the EURO 2020 trophy last summer.

He was a product of the Roma youth academy, playing on loan at Crotone, Valencia and PSG before the move to Milan was made permanent in July.

The Italy international has 253 Serie A games under his belt, scoring 27 goals and providing 29 assists.
