Milan have released a brief statement condemning ‘discrimination and intolerance’ after racist chants were heard during the Rossoneri’s clash with Roma in Serie A on Saturday evening.

Discriminatory shouts and racist language were targeted towards Romelu Lukaku while he was being brought on as a substitute by Jose Mourinho for his Roma debut.

This is not the first time that Lukaku has been on the receiving end of racist abuse from the stands during his time in Serie A, having also being targeted during the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg between Inter and Juventus in April.

A statement released via Milan’s official social media channels on Sunday evening confirmed that the club will work with the necessary authorities to identify and punish those responsible on Saturday night.

The statement read: “There is no space for discrimination and intolerance at AC Milan, and we are certain that this is shared by our true supporters that follow us regularly.

“We will work closely with the authorities to ascertain the facts and identify the individuals responsible for the insults heard at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, and we are ready to apply our code of ethics to punish them accordingly.”
