Milan released a new statement confirming Mike Maignan has suffered a relapse injury of the left calf, after confusion over which leg had been damaged.

The goalkeeper had been out since suffering a lesion to the left calf muscle during international duty for France last month.

He was all set for a comeback this weekend in Serie A against Monza when he felt pain during a training session and tests showed a lesion to the soleus muscle.

Initially, it was reported that the new injury was to the right leg, but that was an error and has now been corrected.

It is therefore a relapse of the left calf, but a different muscle, hitting the soleus rather than the medial gastrocnemius muscle, and Maignan will need to be re-evaluated in 10 days’ time.

That means his 2022 could well be over, and with it his chances of going to the World Cup in Qatar with France.

Maignan won the Serie A title in his debut season with Milan.
