Paolo Maldini has won an award as Manager of the Year following his work to ‘revitalise’ Milan on and off the field.

The director received the Manlio Scopigno award today for his ability to transform a club that had been in nightmare form and leaking money.

A statement from the committee that chose Maldini for the award explained its reasons for picking the former Rossoneri and Italy legend.

“After achieving history on the field with Milan and Italy, he is revealing himself to be a great director too.

“As a technical director of the Rossoneri, he has been able to combine excellent sporting results with a smart and long-term vision for economic development.

“He has been a fundamental figure to revitalise Milan and write a new chapter in an infinite story.”

Under Maldini’s tenure, Milan returned to the Champions League after seven years in the wilderness and are currently just one point off the top of the Serie A table.
