There are strong reports in Uruguay that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur won’t just miss the Champions League against Milan, but will be out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

It is a serious blow for the former Juventus man, who was sold to Spurs for €19m plus bonuses in January 2022.

Bentancur had scored in yesterday’s 4-1 Premier League defeat to Leicester City, only to then limp off with a serious knee injury.

According to reports from Italy and Uruguay, it is more serious than previously thought, as medics expect a torn anterior cruciate injury.

This would mean the end of his season, because the surgery tends to require six to seven months for a full recovery.

Bentancur is certainly therefore out of both legs of the Champions League Round of 16 against Milan, with the opener at San Siro on February 14 and the return in London on March 8.

Antonio Conte’s team are already missing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, winger Ryan Sessegnon and suspended Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg for the first leg on Tuesday.
