Paolo Scaroni, the chairman of Milan, provided an update on the Rossoneri and Inter’s desired capacity for their new stadium.

Many fans have expressed confusion at the two Milanese clubs’ plans to reduce the capacity of their new stadium from the 80,000 currently allowed at the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, drawing attention to the high number of fans regularly attending games at San Siro. Milan and Inter are hoping to move into their new stadium, designed by Populous, before the end of this decade.

Speaking at a BMW event at Milanello, Scaroni discussed the plans for the capacity of the new stadium in Milan.

“This is an element that will be defined in detail only in the executive design phase that will follow the public debate. We have not yet decided anything, we are thinking about a capacity of between 60 and 70 thousand seats.

“What is a fixed point for us is that we want to have two rings and not three, for various reasons, in particular the fact that from the third ring you cannot see the games well.

“We are in a phase of reasoning and we are encouraged in our choices by the fact that the stadium is fuller than usual this season.”

Milan and Inter do not own the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which is owned by the Municipality of Milan, and they’re keen to move into their own home soon, something already done by teams like Juventus and Atalanta. Owning a stadium allows a club to take home greater revenue and control more aspects, something the two Milanese sides are currently limited in.

  1. It is better not to see the games well than not to see at all. There are those games in which third-ring seats are worth gold.
