Roma have reportedly put defender Roger Ibanez on the market, with Milan interested, but Newcastle United the favourites.

The 23-year-old Brazilian is not part of coach Jose Mourinho’s plans for this season and he has been placed on the list of players who can leave, claims Il Messaggero newspaper.

The same source also points to interest from Milan, but not at the €20m asking price.

Newcastle United have already been linked with Ibanez in the past and are ready to try again for the centre-back.

Roma signed him from Atalanta initially on loan in January 2020, but buying him outright that summer at a cost of €9m plus €1m in bonuses.

La Dea also retain a 10 per cent cut of any sell-on fee if the move is made before June 2024.

Ibanez already has 74 Serie A appearances for the two Italian clubs, amassing three goals and two assists in the competition.

  1. Yep… Newcastle can have him too.
I understand we have little means to compete with bigger clubs financially regarding the trasfer market but we are chasing the wrong type of players. If we are unable to attract quality players whats the point in spend money on average young players from all over the world when we can use some italian youngsters. They come with the same risk BUT we wont be wasting big money.
These players we have been linked with are average at best.

  2. Jez its like it used to be in England. Even the English clubs balked at the prices for English players so they went abroad instead. Italian youngsters are no more likely to succeed but they cost Italian clubs more than foreign youngsters. Milan have shown they are buying young, hungry players (regardless of nationality) and that’s what won the title last season. Its a brilliant transfer strategy when everyone else is wasting money they don’t have and its being carried out by people who know what they are doing.
