Milan and Inter ready to leave Milano and San Siro as ‘Cathedral’ project abandoned

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Cathedral project approved at the end of 2021 has been abandoned, so Milan and Inter are looking for a new area to build their stadium and could move outside Milano.

The Milanese sides and the Mayor of Milan had approved a project in December. Inter and Milan were supposed to have their new stadium in the San Siro area in 2027. The concept had been drawn up by Populous, the same group that designed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, that project is no longer valid. Protests from environmentalists and residents convinced Milan Mayor Beppe Sala to induce a public debate over the matter. That would force the clubs to spend more money on a new project, making the process even more lengthy.

Official: New Milan stadium will be the ‘Cathedral’

The Cathedral was supposed to be built in the area of San Siro, close to the Stadio Meazza, but now Inter and Milan are considering leaving Milano. As per the report, the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri are considering building a new stadium at Sesto San Giovanni, just outside the capital of Lombardy.

The building of a new stadium is one of the main targets of both Elliott and the Zhang family, who now have to start a new project from scratch.

UPDATE: Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has denied the report, publishing a document signed by both clubs where they insist they are fully committed to the project.
