According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Cathedral project approved at the end of 2021 has been abandoned, so Milan and Inter are looking for a new area to build their stadium and could move outside Milano.

The Milanese sides and the Mayor of Milan had approved a project in December. Inter and Milan were supposed to have their new stadium in the San Siro area in 2027. The concept had been drawn up by Populous, the same group that designed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, that project is no longer valid. Protests from environmentalists and residents convinced Milan Mayor Beppe Sala to induce a public debate over the matter. That would force the clubs to spend more money on a new project, making the process even more lengthy.

Official: New Milan stadium will be the ‘Cathedral’

The Cathedral was supposed to be built in the area of San Siro, close to the Stadio Meazza, but now Inter and Milan are considering leaving Milano. As per the report, the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri are considering building a new stadium at Sesto San Giovanni, just outside the capital of Lombardy.

The building of a new stadium is one of the main targets of both Elliott and the Zhang family, who now have to start a new project from scratch.

UPDATE: Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has denied the report, publishing a document signed by both clubs where they insist they are fully committed to the project.

20 thought on “Milan and Inter ready to leave Milano and San Siro as ‘Cathedral’ project abandoned”
  1. Absolutely disgusting. Coming on the back of North Macedonia this is like a nail in the coffin.

Year after year just going backward.

  2. @Marco, the stadium is owned by the city, so neither club makes enough profit on games, ergo trying to build their own club owned stadium.

  3. Is anyone really shocked? Ask James Pallotta. The red tape in Italy is the reason Calcio will always be behind other leagues in income revenue, signing talent, bringing jobs and investment, and the ability to host major tournaments.

  4. Surely moving it approx 20km away will darw the same environmental and ecological concerns? Along with the new build at the new location the San Siro will still have to be demolished and likely turned into a residental area. What a shame as it looked like an awesome project that would have benefited both teams.

  5. @David:
20km? No, it’s more like 9km, barely outside the city limits. San Siro is 6km from the city center.
Probably different municipality, maybe more open for projects like this. Looks like the two clubs just don’t want to deal with politicians in Milano any more. Could also be a bluff to put pressure on them (all the local tax revenue from the stadium would be gone).

  6. Just typical. Main reason why Italy can’t play there youth. There will be nothing left of Serie A soon.

  7. Italy is controlled by anti-capitalists who are bent on keeping it in the dark ages… wake up, Italy! You will be left far behind and will wither away at this rate. Where I’m from (Canada), they would have built 10 stadiums by now…

  8. How can the councils not see the benefit of building new stadia? More jobs, investment, tourism..etc. They keep wanting to protect the little they have without seeing the bigger picture. Disgraceful. It will dwarf what ever they get from renting out the San Siro…sigh.

  9. Geezes what absolute ludicrous, absurdity! Typical of Serie A’s problems. Time and time again, Serie A never fails to disappoint when it comes to taking one step forward, but 2 steps back.

Will say it again, some things will never change.

A mentality stuck in the stone ages.

  10. The politicians in Italy are a joke. The clubs will never be able to get the best players without new stadiums.

  11. better to look for a new area that can accept the project soonest as they can.. the major is sh*t for opening this into a public debate.. wasting time and money for sure.

  12. Milan and Inter should build their stadiums in London. There’s more a chance the project would succeed there than in a country run by old, corrupt men and the mafia.

  13. Another political show of idiocy. They so lost, living in the past glories…ironically building was easier at one point haha what happened to that time, anyones guess
Next one is that god awful fiorentina stadium

  14. Typical Italian forever going backwards and it is no surprise they failed to qualify for the WC again. Stone age infrastructure, not giving youth a chance and letting Joao Pedro of all people take a spot in the team.
