Elsewhere in this group, Lille came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Celtic, sending the Rossoneri clear at the top.

The Rossoneri rotated the squad, but kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic upfront, with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Jens Petter Hauge sidelined by COVID, Mateo Musacchio and Leo Duarte injured. Sparta Prague had former Bologna winger Ladislav Krejci, but David Hancko, Lukas Stetina and Ondrej Celustka were injured.

Ibrahimovic’s header landed on the roof of the net and another attempt on a corner flashed wide, but the Swede provided the assist for the opening goal.

Brahim Diaz won back possession in midfield to send Ibrahimovic down the right, the veteran rolled it back across and the Spaniard cut inside to roll it under the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Borek Dockal was fortunate to only get a yellow card for his high tackle on Brahim Diaz, accidentally catching the player in the chin with his knee.

Rade Krunic wasted a couple of promising opportunities, including a hesitation on Sandro Tonali’s floated ball over the top.

Ibrahimovic was bundled over by David Lischka when trying to get on to an Ismael Bennacer cross, but then the Swede fired his penalty on to the crossbar, letting Sparta off the hook.

The Czechs took the hint and started pushing towards half-time, putting in some tricky crosses and with penalty appeals rejected for a Simon Kjaer challenge.

Ibrahimovic was rested for the second half, but replacement Rafael Leao immediately went on the counter to test Milan Heca, who made a fine double save on the Tonali follow-up too.

Leao did get the goal eventually in a very Portuguese move, as Bennacer spread the play down the right for Diogo Dalot to put in a right-foot ‘trivela’ cross off the outside of the boot and Leao just had to sweep in.

Dalot continued to put his mark on the game with his first goal in the Milan jersey. Bennacer was involved again, the cross-field pass releasing him practically at the centre-circle and the defender ran forward, his finish taking a deflection to wrong-foot the goalkeeper at the near post.
