Sinisa Mihajlovic congratulated his Bologna squad from hospital after their draw with Milan. ‘He was very proud and happy, we warmed his heart tonight.’

This was the first match since Mihajlovic went back into the Sant’Orsola hospital for treatment, as there are signs of the leukaemia returning after the initial diagnosis in July 2019.

His team fought hard at San Siro and earned a 0-0 draw against the Serie A leaders, with Lukasz Skorupski making saves on Olivier Giroud, Ismael Bennacer, Rafael Leao and Ante Rebic.

Assistant manager Emilio De Leo was on the bench and held the post-match interviews in place of the Serbian, but the team talks are still very much down to Mihajlovic via video link.

“The coach spoke to the squad after the game, we had a direct video call and he congratulated the squad,” revealed De Leo in a press conference.

“The team was really pleased, while the coach was very proud and happy. We warmed his heart tonight.

“This is a difficult time for us. Mihajlovic asked us not to let go even for a moment, just as he is doing. He was proud of the performance.”

Bologna also made a few tactical adjustments at San Siro, with Roberto Soriano and Riccardo Orsolini dropped in favour of Musa Barrow and Michel Aebischer.

“Soriano had a knock during the week, but we wanted three midfielders to contrast Milan. We were also courageous with the wide men, not dropping too deep in the first half.”
