Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic will soon be made an honorary citizen of Bologna, the city where he experienced his ‘rebirth’ with a bone marrow transplant.

The ceremony has been organised for November 17 with new Mayor Matteo Lepore.

Mihajlovic is rewarded for showing ‘a particular sense of belonging to the local community, connected to the important public role he holds and his life experience in facing illness.”

The Serbian wrote in his recent autobiography that he had two birthdays, the first in Vukovar on February 20, 1969 and the second on October 29, 2019.

That was the day he received a bone marrow transplant at the clinic in Bologna, having already undergone two cycles of chemotherapy for an aggressive form of leukaemia.

He marked the two-year ‘rebirthday’ anniversary by taking the entire Bologna squad and staff – including laundry and canteen members – out to dinner at a country house in the hills.

Mihajlovic also became a grandfather for the first time on October 28, 2021.
