Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic believes great coaches struggle to get ahead in Italy. ‘It’s always the same names going round and round.’

The managerial merry-go-round is continuing in Serie A this season, with Roberto De Zerbi leaving Sassuolo for Shakhtar Donetsk, while Vincenzo Italiano extended his contract with Spezia.

“It’s really difficult for good coaches to get an opportunity in Italy,” Mihajlovic told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“This is why at the top clubs, it’s always the same coaches going round and round. They seek tacticians who already played in Europe, but if you don’t end up at those clubs, you won’t get that experience. It’s like a dog chasing its own tail.

“For example, De Zerbi deserved a chance in Serie A at the highest level, but instead he went abroad. As for Italiano, he is a young and talented coach, he took Spezia into Serie A and kept them there. What more did he have to do, walk on water?”
