Bologna players received a pleasant surprise during their pre-season training camp, a visit from coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia.

The tactician was first diagnosed in July 2019 and spent all that summer in the Sant’Orsola hospital in Bologna undergoing treatment, including a bone marrow transplant.

He was able to follow the team’s progress via video link and constant communication with his staff.

Tests showed the leukaemia was returning and he went back into the same clinic for further treatment.

During this morning’s session at the Casteldebole training ground, Mihajlovic made a surprise visit to see his players, with Eurosport stating he remained for circa 30 minutes.

Like the first game of 2019-20, he wants to be on the bench for the opening match of the season on the weekend of August 13.

The Serbian tactician turned 53 in February and recently became a grandfather.

He has been in charge of Bologna since January 2019.
