Their coach spoke to Tuttosport about his recent meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

“It was an unforgettable experience. Pope Francis is a wise, witty man who always has a joke at the ready,” said Mihajlovic.

“I went with my wife and my mother-in-law, so when I presented them, he said: ‘You should be made a Saint for bringing your mother-in-law.’

“The Pope is like an all-round player, he can cover any role, the important thing is that he’s there. He makes the difference in every situation.”

Mihajlovic has rediscovered his religion after the battle with leukaemia, although it was certainly not the first time he felt fear in his life.

“When there’s a war on and bombs are falling down from the sky, just beforehand you can hear this whistling sound. When you are in the basement, you listen out for the whistle to figure out if the bomb is going further away or about to land on your head. The whistle is the most frightening part of the whole situation.

“As a child, other than the dream of becoming a footballer, I mainly remember feeling hungry. The only way to escape from that poverty and beat hunger is to really give your all. God gave me talent, but I also had to work so hard and make sacrifices to become a player.

“I think I’ll stop working when I’m 75 or 80 years old, then I’d like to spend time with my family and many, many grandchildren.”
