It’s a campaign that started with his leukaemia diagnosis, continued with months in hospital having chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, then the COVID-19 crisis caused the general lockdown and restart after three months behind closed doors.
“This is not football. We chose the only way to end the season, but fortunately, it’s almost over now. We’ll try to win, it doesn’t count for anything, but it’s better to have 49 points than 46.
“The next season will be a little anomalous too, but we’ll have to adapt. You learn something from every season and must try to find the positives even in the negative periods. It has been a strange season for what happened all over the world, and to me. I hope neither of them happen again.”
Tomorrow will be his 300th Serie A game as a coach, taking on one of his former clubs, Torino.
“It’s a good achievement. I’d like to be a coach for another 10 years, then become a director. If I reach 600 games as a coach, after 600 as a player, plus everything I’ve been through with war, illness… My experience will be useful for someone to learn from.
“I had a good experience at Torino, even if there were some misunderstandings that rather damaged the rapport we had. I made up with (President Urbano) Cairo, because during the course of my illness, he was one of those who showed that he really did care about me. I am even writing a book with his publishing house.”
Mihajlovic is not someone who has ever held back with harsh words, but he has taken a new tactic with his Bologna squad after their 4-0 defeat to Fiorentina.
