Mihajlovic: ‘I advised Donnarumma to stay at Milan but…’

Sinisa Mihajlovic feels that the criticism of Gianluigi Donnarumma is unfair and recalled that he advised him not to leave Milan.

The 23-year-old Italian shot stopper made a calamitous mistake in the 60th minute of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid earlier this week, being caught out with the ball at his feet by Karim Benzema, who went on to net the equalising goal.

Speaking in a press conference today, Mihalhovic discussed if Benzema had fouled Donnarumma in the lead-up to the goal and the Italian goalkeeper’s decision to join PSG last summer.

“I don’t know, it’s one of those situations that’s in the grey area, that have to be interpreted by the referee. You all are too harsh on Donnarumma, both the French and the Italians.

“You make him pay for everything. He didn’t make the right choice, I also spoke to him and advised him to stay, but he chose this way. If it hadn’t been for Donnarumma, Italy would not have won the European Championship, he was the protagonist. He’s a good guy anyway.”

The 23-year-old Donnarumma left Milan on a free transfer last summer in order to sign a five-year contract with the Parisian side.

This season he has only made 11 Ligue 1 appearances, failing to displace veteran shot stopper Keylor Navas in the starting lineup. In those 11 league appearances, the former Milan man conceded eight goals and kept four clean sheets.
