Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic said his ‘conscience is clear’ amid reports the club will fire him and bring in Paulo Sousa.

The Rossoblu have started the campaign in poor form with only three points from five Serie A rounds.

They were held to a 2-2 draw at Spezia this afternoon, despite the Marko Arnautovic brace, leaving them in the relegation battle.

There are reports that Bologna directors will meet with Mihajlovic on Monday and have been in contact with former Milan and Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa.

“My state of mind is the same as it was after Verona, Salernitana or Lazio, all games where we had the chances to win after a strong start,” Mihajlovic said in a press conference.

“We weren’t courageous enough after taking the lead, we didn’t keep attacking them, we didn’t push our wing-backs up on their centre-backs. We sat back and Spezia took control. It was only a matter of time before we conceded.”

The coach, who spent the summer undergoing treatment for leukaemia, was asked if he felt his job was at risk.

“For now, I don’t get that feeling. I won’t start worrying in advance, I just try to give my best and continue along my way.

“In football, there are only sacked coaches and those who will be sacked. I try to stay on my toes as long as I am the Bologna coach.”

What does Mihajlovic expect from the meeting with the club directors tomorrow?

“I expect to wake up in the morning, still be alive and go to work on the pitch with the same grit I always have done. That is all I can control, and I won’t waste time thinking about what I cannot control.

“If it happens, it happens. My conscience is clear.”

Sousa would be an interesting choice, as the 52-year-old’s career has been on a downward trajectory for some time.

Since leaving Fiorentina in 2017, he has been sacked by Tianjin Quanjian, Girondins de Bordeaux, the Poland national team and Brazilian club Flamengo.

He was spotted in Verona last week, where he is attending several Serie A games and waiting for his next role.
