Sinisa Mihajlovic was not surprised by Bologna’s victory over Jose Mourinho’s Roma. ‘The best team doesn’t always win in football.’

The game was decided by a Mattias Svanberg screamer from distance, while goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski performed heroics to keep the clean sheet at the Stadio Dall’Ara.

“We knew it was going to be tough against a strong side and we were fortunate too, but it was still deserved,” Mihajlovic told DAZN.

“Roma had two or three chances, but the team showed the right spirit to largely control the game. It’s a morale-booster, you don’t beat Roma every day.”

It had started in the worst way with Marko Arnautovic limping off in the opening minutes with a muscular issue.

“We struggled to keep the ball without Arnautovic and Roma pinned us into our own half, but we held out well. Then we had a few counter-attacks in the second half and either made the wrong choice or timed the pass wrong. It would’ve been a different game with Arnautovic, we had to focus more on defend and counter.

“We always play out from the back, but it’s about being able to take a breather with the ball at our feet and not when the opponent has it.”

Mihajlovic was asked if the best team and coach won this evening.

“Mourinho is the best and so is his team, but we know that in football the best team doesn’t always win. We prepared well for this game and were fortunate at times. You don’t get anywhere in football without a little bit of luck.”
