“We came here to win and it’s disappointing that we didn’t, because when you take the lead twice then you need to bring home the result,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

Mihajlovic was particularly incensed by replays of a penalty appeal for handball in the second half.

“It was a clear penalty. What is the goal-line referee there to do if not to see these things?

“With our substitutions we proved that we wanted to win the game and we even changed system. We lacked the determination to finish off the game and wasted a couple of counter-attacks.

“At the end of the day, the 2-2 result is fair. Empoli play some of the best football in Italy and it was a difficult match on their own turf. We have to compliment Marco Giampaolo on his team.

“We knew that they’d lower the tempo in the last 15-20 minutes, so we had to raise it and try to finish them off. We lacked consistency, but if we’d had that penalty and gone 3-1 up, it might’ve ended there.”

Mario Balotelli came on for the last half-hour, but was booked and wasted a couple of great opportunities.

“He was hungry, perhaps too much, and you can tell he hasn’t played for a long time. He did things wrong that he usually doesn’t. The only way to recover form and fitness is by playing, the important thing is that he continues to behave and train like this. He is an extra resource.”

So is Luiz Adriano, who was on the bench after his transfer to Jiangsu Suning sensationally collapsed.

“He spent seven days on planes, so he wasn’t in any condition to play. I am happy he returned, he always worked well.”
