Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic defended attacking midfielder Roberto Soriano, who returned from international duty without having played one minute.

The Serbian coach hit out at Italy CT Roberto Mancini for having called up Soriano without giving the 30-year-old a chance to pull on the Azzurri shirt.

“If he had been very attentive to what’s going on at Bologna,” Mihajlovic said at a press conference. “Mancini wouldn’t bring Soriano to sit in the stands for three games.

“I didn’t expect zero minutes in three games. He’s the best Italian midfielder and it didn’t feel right.

“Having known, it would have been better if he stayed with us. I didn’t like it; I speak as the coach of Bologna and as a friend of Mancini. Three times in the stands against… who?

“Give him the satisfaction, he has scored nine goals, made many assists. Let him play. If I had been Soriano, I would have told him off. With all due respect for the national team and Mancini.”

Soriano has played all 28 games in Serie A so far for Bologna, scoring, as mentioned, nine goals in the process.

His next chance to impress is against Inter tomorrow, when Bologna host the League leaders at the Renato Dall’Ara.
