The TV rights were assigned to Sky and Perform today at a cost of €973m per year, after Mediapro saw their initial win wiped out by legal action over anti-trust violations.
“It’s a very important day for Italian football, as after a long negotiation process started circa a year ago, the TV rights have finally been sold,” said Lega Serie A President Micciché.
“Perform are an international company who for the first time are entering into Italian football with a very significant offer.
“It is a confirmation for Sky, who take the majority of the packages and therefore most of the games that will be transmitted. We received over €973m per year, circa 20 per cent more than the last offer received in January.
“There is another €100m in add-ons, while if we calculate TV rights sold abroad – and we haven’t completed all of those yet – the overall worth of Italian football has climbed to €1.4bn.”
Fans in Italy were afraid the new structure of the rights would force them to buy two different broadcaster contracts to watch all the games, while delays to the free-to-air rights would end the legendary Sunday dinner-time highlights programme 90’ Minuto on Rai.
“We have been able to get more elasticity from the winning bidders to ensure that 90’ Minuto will remain for this year and the next three years.
“There are already negotiations between Sky and Perform to avoid the need for two broadcasting deals and I hope they’ll be successful.”
