Although they concede it is practically impossible to sign Leo Messi, many Napoli fans are calling the Argentinean to follow in Diego Maradona’s footsteps.

Barcelona’s announcement of Messi’s exit shocked the football world on Thursday, with fans from all over the world dreaming of his signing now.

However, apparently, only PSG and Manchester City can currently afford the 34-year-old who saw his contract at the Nou Camp expire in June 2021.

He had reached an agreement with the Catalans, but the La Liga giants had to drop their legendary striker “because of financial and structural obstacles.”

Among all fans around the world dreaming of signing Messi, some feel they are more entitled to fantasise.

Thousands of Napoli fans are sharing messages on social media, imagining the Argentinean picking up the baton from Diego Armando Maradona who joined the Partenopei from Barcelona in 1984, helping the Serie A side win the only two Scudetto in their history.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020, and Napoli named their stadium after their legend.

Now, Napoli fans dream of seeing his heir wear the Azzurri shirt again, although they know it may be impossible.

  1. Messi is not as big as Maradona. It takes universe-sized balls to go to Napoli, even now Napoli is not a small club anymore, but still. I’d rather see him take a supermassive pay cut and go to Atalanta or Genoa instead. But we know he’s going to PSG.
