Leo Messi has now played the same number of games and scored as many goals as Napoli legend Diego Armando Maradona at the World Cup.

The PSG forward inspired Argentina’s 2-0 victory against Mexico on Saturday night, opening the account in the second half with a lovely left-foot finish from outside the box.

Argentina had lost the opening match with Saudi Arabia, so they had to win against Mexico to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The 35-year-old has now equalled Napoli and Argentina legend Diego Armando Maradona for games played and goals scored at the World Cup.

They have both played 21 games in the competition, scoring eight goals each. However, Maradona led his country to win the World Cup in 1986, while Messi’s best result was a runner-up finish in 2014.

Ex-Fiorentina striker Gabriel Omar Batistuta is the most prolific Argentinean player at the World Cup with 10 goals in 12 appearances.

Messi’s Argentina haven’t secured qualification to the Round of 16 at Qatar 2022 and will face Poland in the final match of group C on Wednesday.

  1. Maradona was a better player than Messi , no doubt about it. He was stronger , and a bit faster and also able to head the ball. Despite personal issues, he also dragged Argentina to a World Cup victory, and Napoli to a league win.
