Napoli have announced Dries Mertens underwent surgery on his left shoulder in Belgium and will have to rest for two to three weeks before starting the rehabilitation process.

The Partenopei released a statement on their official website saying the Belgium international underwent surgery in his homeland.

Italy sent Belgium out of the European Championship in the quarter-finals and Mertens underwent surgery ahead of the new season.

“During the day, Dries Mertens underwent a stabilisation surgery on his left shoulder in Belgium by Dr. Declercq and under the supervision of Dr. Canonico,” the club wrote in a statement.

“The player will observe a rest period of two to three weeks and then the rehabilitation process will begin.”

The 34-year-old centre-forward, capped 102 times by Belgium, played 29 times in Serie A 2020-21 and scored nine goals in the process.

He signed a new contract in June last year and the deal with the Azzurri expires in June 2022, but the two parties have an option to extend for a further year in the current deal.

Mertens played 21 minutes in the 2-1 defeat to Italy last Friday, when Roberto Mancini’s men booked a date with Spain in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
