Dries Mertens insists Napoli are aiming to win the Europa League – ‘last year we were unlucky’.

The Partenopei reached the semi-final of the competition last year, but were eliminated by Dnipro, and get their new campaign underway against Club Brugge tomorrow.

“This is just the start, but we always want to win something,” Mertens told journalists in the pre-match Press conference.

“Last year we were unlucky against Dnipro with their offside goal and we didn’t get to the final, but this year we want to get there.

“We aim to get to the end, to win. That was what the squad was thinking about last year. We have great quality, we have all the players from last year and we’ll be ready.”

Mertens is a Belgian international, so is well-placed to give his opinion on tomorrow’s opponents.

“They’re not an easy team. They’ve had some problems, but on their day they have a good team. They played badly [at the weekend] losing to the bottom of the table team [Mouscron-Péruwelz], but they’ll be motivated to try and win.

“We’re playing at home, and we have to try and take three points.”
