Now Mertens has matches the record with his goal against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 at the Stadio San Paolo.

The feat is all the more remarkable considering Mertens had only hit double figures once in his first three seasons with Napoli.

His breakout season came in 2016-17, when he was moved into a forward position by Maurizio Sarri in the aftermath of Arkadiusz Milik's cruciate ligament injury in October 2016.

Mertens bagged 34 goals in all competition that season.

Mertens has beaten Hamsik’s tally in just 310 games, compared to the Slovak’s 520 appearances.

Hamsik’s highest haul in a single season was, like Mertens, also in 2016-17, when he scored 15 in all competition from midfield.

Mertens' contract expires in the summer, but still has time to surpass Hamsik's record.
