The 33-year-old has been in Naples since 2013 and earned the most Neapolitan of nicknames, Ciro.

“At times I think that I can play until I’m 40, whereas at others I think I don’t have kids yet, I have time to travel the world. It’d be nice to discover something new,” Mertens told Belgian paper HLN.

He had been on the verge of leaving Napoli last summer, but confessed spending lockdown by the sea changed his mind.

“When I retire from playing, I will go to live in Belgium and spend more time with my nephews, but I spoke to Kat and we’d love to keep the apartment in Naples.

“I live like a King here, it’s true, but it doesn’t take much to lose your throne. For now, I am enjoying this fairy tale that I am experiencing.

“I don’t fear that popularity will disappear after football and I am not afraid that people will forget about me.”

The Belgian was asked if he would like to become a coach after he hangs up his boots.

“No, it’s too stressful. You see coaches and they are always tired!”
