Mertens: ‘I’d lose teeth for Napoli’

Dries Mertens said he’d gladly lose another two teeth against Feyenoord if that meant Napoli getting through to the Champions League Round of 16.

It kicks off on Wednesday at 19.45 GMT and the Partenopei need both a victory in Holland and for Manchester City to beat Shakhtar Donetsk away from home.

The task has become even tougher with Lorenzo Insigne out injured.

“Lorenzo is a great player and we’ll always miss him when he’s not there, but we also have many others ready to replace him. We have a great squad and it’s time to prove that,” said Mertens in his Press conference.

“We are in good shape really, it’s just that we need to start scoring more goals again by playing our football. We were upset after the defeat to Juventus, as we were unaccustomed to losing, but if we look at last season’s results, we’re doing so much better.

“There is always going to be criticism, even when we play well and win. Now we must react, because we want to get back on track. I am very glad to be playing so often, I’m not tired and my batteries are charged up.”

Belgian talent Mertens is no stranger to Feyenoord, as the last time he was in this stadium with PSV Eindhoven, he accidentally had two teeth knocked out.

“If I have to lose another two teeth for Napoli to win, then I’d do that! My family will all be here, as Rotterdam isn’t far from my home and it’s wonderful to speak my language again.

“We know full well that qualification isn’t only down to us. I haven’t spoken to (Manchester City star Kevin) De Bruyne, but I am sure they’ll do their best to get the points in Ukraine. After all, they’d be setting a record with a 100 per cent group stage record.”
