Dries Mertens admits that he’d prefer to be starting games for Napoli, but says he’ll do all he can from the bench.

The Belgian has made 20 Serie A appearances so far this term, but 12 of those have been from the bench, including a six minute cameo on Monday night in which he was sent off against Sassuolo.

“The important thing is to give 100 per cent to help the team,” Mertens insisted in the pre-match Press conference ahead of Napoli’s Europa League match with Trabzonspor.

“I like to play from the start, like everyone else, and if I have to play for just half an hour then I’ll do my best.

“The Coach decides when you play, and you have to accept that. Before the red card [on Monday] I played six minutes, but the important thing is winning.

“The important thing is that the team wins, of course one always wants to play more, but I want to stay here and help the team.

“I scored against Udinese, we won against Trabzonspor and I didn’t play [in defeat] at Palermo. I don’t think it’s true that I’m playing badly.

“I hope to play tomorrow and play a great game.”
