Napoli forward Dries Mertens revealed he loves to live in Naples. ‘It will be a problem when I have to move back to Belgium. I hope to postpone it for as long as possible’.

The Dutch forward is in his ninth year with the Partenopei, as he arrived from PSV Eindhoven in July 2013, and his deal expires after the season.

Mertens has a clause linked to conditions that could automatically renew the deal, but his future is still uncertain.

“They are all beautiful and important,” Mertens said, according to Sky Sport Italia. “I don’t need to add anything else, everyone knows how much I love it.

“When I wake up and see the sea, it’s beautiful. The problem will be when I have to move back to Belgium.

“I hope to postpone it for as long as possible. My son will be born in Naples, but we haven’t chosen his name yet.”

Mertens, capped 103 times by Belgium, has yet to win a Scudetto in Italy but is still dreaming as Napoli sit first in the league after 12 games.

“We must always dream,” Mertens added. “We are doing well, we have bought some players who have raised the level of the team.

“In some games we need luck, but we hope to be able to celebrate at the end.”

I hope he stays in Italy for as long as possible, as a player, a coach, an ambassador for the club. He’s been one of the best imports in recent memory. Even if he does return to Belgium, I’m sure that he will return to Italy on a regular basis.

    *editor, see me after class.
