Dries Mertens is expected in Istanbul this evening to sign his contract with Galatasaray, as he did not wish to play for another Serie A club against Napoli.

The Belgium international was a free agent after Napoli decided against taking up their option to extend his contract at €5m per season.

Instead, they offered him a new deal worth at first €1.5m, then up to a maximum of €2.4m, failing to agree terms.

Juventus, Lazio and Inter were all linked, but after representing Napoli for so many years, he did not want to remain in Serie A if it meant facing his beloved Partenopei.

According to various reports, Mertens has agreed personal terms with Galatasaray for a one-year contract, with option to extend for another season.

Comments from Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis suggest the 35-year-old intends to retire next summer.

Mertens is expected in Istanbul this evening to undergo a medical and sign the contract.

He will be joined there by another ex-Serie A player, as Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is making the transfer after his loan spell at Fiorentina.
