The club’s all-time top scorer had been on the verge of walking away this summer, but signed a new two-year contract and committed his future to the Partenopei.

Now he is hoping to talk teammate Callejon into following suit at the Stadio San Paolo.

“I tried to convince him to stay. I am still trying to convince him, I won’t give up,” Mertens told Il Mattino newspaper.

“Losing a friend like him would be disappointing, but it’s tough to lose a teammate and extraordinary professional like Jose as well. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but there’s still time.”

As for the future, Napoli hosted Lille forward Osimhen this week in a charm offensive to show the sights of the city, hoping to convince him to accept a transfer.

“I heard good things about him from my friends at Charleroi, where he played before moving to France,” added Mertens.

“I don’t know if he’ll come here, but in any case, he is the kind of player we need at Napoli.”
